Step into the unforgettable evening that was the Hope Biosciences Research Foundation (HBRF) inaugural Gala, held on October 26, 2024, at The Post Oak Hotel. Under the warm glow of chandeliers, more than 400 guests gathered in celebration of lives transformed, stories of resilience, and the groundbreaking science fueling hope for the future. In its first year, the sold-out event raised over $1 million, setting the stage for future advances in regenerative medicine and marking a night where generosity and scientific vision intertwined.
Guests entered the venue through a grand corridor of flowing white drapery, greeted by a striking black wall emblazoned with the iconic Hope logo. Stepping into a dreamscape, they found tables adorned with white roses, lush green accents, and towering floral arrangements, all set under a soft, ambient glow.
Lord, we look into the tomorrows that will come and trust that the fire that will begin here will spread until You give us healing in areas we couldn't even dream of tonight.
DR. ED YOUNG
The evening began with heartfelt reflections from Dr. Ed Young, former pastor of Houston's Second Baptist Church, who spoke to the profound promise of HBRF's work, leading the room in an inspiring invocation.

Beloved nurses at Hope and co-hosts of HBRF's "Hopeful News Network" podcast, Sherry Diers and David Gonzalez, took the stage to welcome guests and honor the host committee, while extending heartfelt gratitude to the night's generous sponsors. They highlighted the significance of the gold Hope logo pins worn by those with personal experiences of HBRF's impact—a symbol that underscored the room's collective journey. As these moving stories resonated throughout the hall, guests enjoyed a gourmet dinner featuring filet mignon and pistachio-crusted sea bass, setting the stage for an unforgettable evening.

The heart of the program unfolded with a moving video introduction of HBRF's Compassionate Use Program, a pillar that truly embodies the foundation's mission. Since its inception, HBRF has received over 25 FDA authorizations for compassionate use across a range of conditions, from congenital muscular dystrophy to primary lateral sclerosis and spinal cord injuries. The video concluded with the story of Luis Camacho, the newest patient to join the Compassionate Use program, a possibility made real through the community's generous support.

From one of the featured families in the video, Dr. Anuja and Udayan Vyas shared an update on their son Neel, who began treatment at HBRF after developing epilepsy at age seven due to an infection of unknown origin. Before joining the program, Neel was experiencing multiple Grand Mal seizures daily, with his father recalling over 500 seizures witnessed. The Vyas family shared a monumental update with the Gala audience—after a year of cell therapy and other supportive treatments, Neel had achieved a remarkable milestone: 30 consecutive days seizure-free. The biggest surprise, however, was yet to come – unbeknownst to the Vyas family, HBRF had petitioned FDA to extend Neel's treatment for another year. Team members flooded the stage to surprise the family with the news.

Momentum continued when Cathy Jackson, a clinical trial participant who also volunteered as the Gala's Auction Chair, took the stage to announce an exciting partnership. Cathy's protocol, in lupus, became HBRF's first peer-reviewed published piece in September 2022, appearing in the Journal of Translational Autoimmunity. Lupus is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease of unknown origin that painfully affects multiple bodily systems. Approximately 1.5 million Americans, and nearly 5 million globally, suffer from a disease conventionally considered "incurable." HBRF was overjoyed to announce that Hope's work in lupus will continue in partnership with the Lupus Foundation's Texas Gulf Coast Chapter. Together, Hope Biosciences Research Foundation and Lupus Foundation Texas Gulf Coast will raise funds, execute, analyze, and share results of a year-long study of 15 patients in the greater Houston area currently living without hope for a healthier future (stay tuned to hopebio.org for research updates).

Host Committee Co-chair Bella Chramosta, a Senior at Episcopal High School, took the stage to share her own journey with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and POTS disease. After numerous doctor's visits and ongoing symptoms, Bella found transformative relief after undergoing ten rounds of stem cell therapy. Her testimony captured the audience's hearts, underscoring the potential of HBRF's work. She then introduced fellow high school students, making strides in healthcare.
One of the evening's standout moments was a heartfelt tribute to HBRF's first Luminary Award recipients: three Kingwood High School students, Ema Suljkanovic, Rachel Phillips, and Alayna Nunez. These remarkable students, as part of a Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) project, undertook an in-depth exploration of Parkinson's Disease, a condition that affects nearly one million Americans. Their commitment went beyond research; they actively sought out organizations making strides in combating Parkinson's and ultimately raised $1,400 to support HBRF's mission. Local legend and community luminary, Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale, had the honor of presenting the awards to these young changemakers, celebrating their inspiring dedication to advancing healthcare solutions.

Before HBRF's Luminary Award recipients left the stage, Auctioneer Tim Dietz inspired the audience to match the students' contribution, raising an astounding $50,400, which was immediately matched by another donor, followed by additional gifts totaling over $400,000!

The live auction followed, showcasing exclusive packages that captivated the audience. Guests enthusiastically bid on items such as a Texas Flag painting created live by artist Taft McWhorter, an Italian villa escape with private tours and wine tastings, and a Vallarta VIP Luxury Getaway complete with private jet and shopping spree. Other favorites included Texans sideline passes and United Polaris Business Class tickets to any European destination, along with a Rolex Datejust, blending 18k yellow gold and stainless steel. Tim concluded with a personal appeal to support Hope – Dietz shared that he personally knows Luis Camacho from the Compassionate Use video who just received his auctioneer license and looked forward to seeing him back on stage to fulfill his dream to be an auctioneer.

As the night approached its finale, guests eagerly anticipated the Hope necklace pull, sponsored by Thomas Markle Jewelers. Each attendee who purchased a sterling silver Hope necklace entered a raffle for a chance to win a stunning 2.27-carat diamond pendant crafted in 18kt white gold—a radiant symbol of the evening's theme, "Hope." Sarah and Phillip Markle had the honor of announcing the lucky winner.
The evening concluded with a soulful rendition of "The Prayer," sung by Faith and Jon Hartlage. Faith is a clinical trial participant at HBRF in a clinical trial for multiple sclerosis. In the days following the Gala, HBRF announced promising topline results from the trial Faith participated in; that is, statistically significant improvements for those who received stem cells in the trial. As the evening drew to a close, the air was filled with gratitude, hope and excitement for the groundbreaking future HBRF is creating.
